The Carolina Panthers added another name to their general manager search, and you can scratch another potential candidate off their list.
San Francicsco 49ers senior personnel executive Martin Mayhew, the Detroit Lions’ former GM, interviewed with the Panthers Friday, according to a source.
Mayhew joins Buffalo Bills assistant college scouting director Lake Dawson and Houston Texans assistant GM Jimmy Raye III as the only external candidates to interview.
Raye met with Panthers officials on Thursday, followed by Dawson and Mayhew on Friday.
All three satisfy the Rooney rule, which requires NFL teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coaching and GM positions.
Panthers interim GM Marty Hurney also has interviewed with the team’s search committee and remains the favorite to keep the job full-time.
Tennessee Titans player personnel director Ryan Cowden was mentioned as a possible candidate because of his strong ties to Carolina. But the Panthers have not made a formal request to interview Cowden, a league source told the Observer.
Cowden, a former Wofford defensive back, was a longtime Panthers scout.
