Winthrop’s six-game winning streak came to an end Thursday in a 77-61 loss at Liberty.
Liberty (14-10 overall, 5-6 in the Big South) went on a 9-0 run early in the first half for a 17-7 lead. The lead grew to16 points at 27-11 before the Eagles bounced back.
A Bjorn Broman triple with 1:41 left in the half got the Eagles back within eight, but Liberty answered ss Caleb Homesley drained a corner three for a 37-26 lead, which remained the score at the break.
Liberty opened the second half with a 7-0 run for a 44-29 lead, and the Flames pushed their lead to 50-33 with 14:06 left after Ryan Kemrite hit two free throws.
Winthrop’s Xavier Cooks missed two free throws with 4:17 to play, but on his second miss Adam Pickett rebounded and scored to cut it to a nine-point game with 4:12 to play. But Liberty answered with Homesley’s 3-pointer from the wing with 3:52 left.
Winthrop (13-9, 7-4 Big South) was led by Cooks with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Anders Broman added 14 points for the Eagles.
Liberty was paced by Scottie James (21 points, 8 rebounds), Homesley (16 points, 6 rebounds) and Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz (14 points, 5 assists.
Winthrop returns home when it hosts Radford at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum.
