ROCK HILL

Santa’s workshop may be in the North Pole, but a car dealership in Rock Hill is the next best thing for people who see Christmas looming and no clue how to put together toys.

For the 25th consecutive year, the service department at Burns Chevrolet-Cadillac will assemble bicycles, scooters, and other toys -- for free.

Burns’ service of putting together toys starts Dec. 18 and runs through Dec. 22.

Just in time for Christmas.

“We have seen it all over the years, from doll houses to electric cars and everything in between,” said Fred Dearth, fixed operations director at Burns. Dearth is over the mechanics, body shop, and parts departments, which all pitch in to help families have toys put together for Christmas. “We put it all together for people. Some of these toys, there are a lot of parts and it can be tricky. We even put the stickers on.”

The dealership started the service a quarter century ago to help single mothers, grandparents, and others with putting together mainly bicycles and other larger toys. That service has expanded to toys of all types.

Businesses assisting the community with toys is a Rock Hill tradition. Gregory’s Marine & RV in Rock Hill also is collecting and putting together toys in a free service the shop has offered for more than a decade.

Michael King, who has worked at Burns Chevrolet-Cadillac for nine years, has put together an intricate dune buggy and a scooter for two kids to find Christmas morning.

“I just want to help parents and especially the kids have a great Christmas,” King said.

Dearth said the greatest gift he and his employees get is the knowledge that a child will open up a Christmas present that is ready to use or ride.

“The people who work here really want to help a child wake up on Christmas not with a box, but a toy ready to go,” Dearth said.

The dealership is at 2515 Cherry Road, Rock Hill. For information, call the dealership service department: 803-792-0158.
