Fort Mill police arrested the accused shooter in Friday’s shooting death of a former South Pointe football star after a fight broke out on a street.
Jackel Marquise Clinton, 22, of Lancaster was arrested in Chester County late Saturday morning after a manhunt that included police in York, Chester and Lancaster counties, said Chief Jeff Helms of the Fort Mill Police Department.
Clinton was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, said Maj. Bryan Zachary of Fort Mill Police.
“The public and the police agencies worked together to help us get this suspect into custody,” Zachary said.
Clinton appeared before a magistrate a few minutes before noon Saturday and was denied bond. He will be sent to the York County jail.
De’mon Davis, 22, of Rock Hill, was killed at the scene on Sanders Street in Fort Mill, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said Saturday morning.
The victim, now identified as Davis, was found dead around 4:40 p.m. after a fight broke out, Fort Mill Police Department Chief Jeff Helms said Friday.
Davis was a star football player at Rock Hill’s South Pointe High School and played on several state championship teams. Davis, who graduated from South Pointe in 2015, was a linebacker who won several awards for his sports achievements.
It remains unclear why Davis and Clinton were both in Fort Mill to apparently fight before the altercation turned deadly.
York County Sheriff’s Office K-9 units assisted Fort Mill police in the search and investigation, said Trent Faris, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.
The shooting location is inside the town of Fort Mill near the intersection of Tom Hall Street and Sanders Street, east of downtown Fort Mill.
Sanders Street was blocked by police vehicles and a large crowd gathered at a residence near where Davis’ body was found.
Clinton, now charged with murder, escaped death in 2012 when his mother was gunned down in a murder.
Clinton as a teen survived a January 2012 shooting at the hands of his mother’s estranged boyfriend. He was injured when his mother was killed in front of him near apartments in Fort Mill. Clinton was in an SUV with his mother, Jackie Craine, when Craine’s former boyfriend shot her 14 times, killing her.
Clinton was shot in the leg and was able to escape by smashing through a window, The Herald reported. Clinton had tried to protect his mother, courtroom testimony from 2012 showed.
Clinton faced gun and drug charges after a Fort Mill raid in 2016, according to police and court records. He also has convictions for drugs and weapons from 2014 and assault from 2015 in Lancaster County, records show.
