There weren’t injuries in a Lake Wylie fire Tuesday, but race cars were damaged.
Bethel Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call just before noon off Montgomery Road, off the main channel of the lake.
“It was a garage,” said Chief Don Love. “There were some race cars in it. The garage caught fire.”
Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from reaching the home.
Never miss a local story.
“It was a detached garage. You might call it his shop,” Love said. “He had a boat in there, a couple of cars, a drag car and stuff like that.”
County fire investigators have not responded to queries about the cause of the fire.
Former firefighter Jim Davis, who had his own home in the area burn in 2000, saw the blaze as it was happening.
“I had just put my boat in and I was heading out to see if I could find any crappies on the other side of the bridge, on the North Carolina side, and I saw the smoke,” he said. “I just took off and went north.”
Davis pulled his boat into the first cove after Buster Boyd Access Area, where he saw fire gutting through the middle of the structure.
“It was a big garage that was burning,” Davis said. “Just about the time I pulled up the fire trucks had pulled up. The flames had started to come out the top.”
He estimates the main house was 40 or 50 feet away. He watched as firefighters moved a transport trailer to keep it from burning. By the time Davis left the fire had burned through the middle and the top of the garage had collapsed.
