Lancaster County high school seniors can apply for $500 scholarship
The Lancaster Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting applications for the Glenn Alexander Memorial Scholarship through 3 p.m. March 26, according to the conservation district.
The $500 scholarship is open to a Lancaster County high school senior. The student must be attending an accredited college, university or technical college.
Though not a requirement to apply, preferred applicants will be majoring in an agricultural or environmental field such as agriculture education, biology, horticulture or forestry.
The scholarship is named for Glenn Alexander, who served for 57 years with the conservation district.

Community members raise $300K for children with disabilities
The Allegro Foundation, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that supports teaching initiatives for children with disabilities, raised $300,000 during its annual gala Jan. 6, a release states.
The Allegro Foundation combines movement with educational and medical expertise to create new techniques to teach children with disabilities, according to the foundation. The program is free and serves children in the Fort Mill, Charlotte and Huntersville areas with a range of intellectual disabilities.
Fort Mill school board members, community leaders and business owners attended the event at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

Local students make university dean’s lists
Joseph McLoon of Rock Hill was named last to the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s dean’s list for fall 2017, a release states McLoon is an information technology major. A student must complete at least 12 graded credits for the semester and earn at least a 3.25 grade point average to make the list.
Julia Russell of Fort Mill was named to the Marist College dean's list for fall 2017 semester, a release states. Russell is an applied mathematics major.
Eirk Miller of Fort Mill was named to University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s dean’s list for fall 2017, a release states. Miller is a graduate student in the master of business administration program.
Carolina Christenbury, Joseph Giles, Allison Jenkins and Bailey Woolley, all of Rock Hill, along with Thomas Broom III of York, Erika Drutis of Clover and Claire Frase of Tega Cay made the dean’s list at Presbyterian College for fall 2017 semester, a release states. Students must have between a 3.3 and 3.9 grade point average to make the list.
Corinne Baltz of York made the dean’s list for fall 2017 at Baldwin Wallace University, a release states. Baltz is an English major. Students must have at least a 3.6 grade point average for seven or more graded hours in a semester to qualify.
Matthew Evdemon and Thomas Gomes, both of Indian Land, were named to The Citadel’s fall 2017 president’s list, a release states. The president’s list is a combination of the dean’s list and the commandant's distinguished list. The list honors cadets at the Charleston-based military college who maintain excellent military and academic records, according to the college.
Several York, Lancaster and Chester county students attending University of South Carolina Lancaster also made the president’s honor roll and dean’s lists for fall 2017.
Fort Mill schools names 5 to Hall of Fame
The Fort Mill school board in January approved five inductees to the district’s Hall of Fame. The 2017 class includes Anne Springs Close, Simon Algah White Sr., Lee Carothers, Jane Langley and Stormy Young, a release states.
The induction ceremony is 5 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the district office.
The hall of fame, established in 2016, honors graduates of Fort Mill schools and other individuals who made significant contributions to the district, their communities, the state or the nation.
American Cancer Society honors Rock Hill woman
Rock Hill resident Pansy Yates recently received an appreciation award from the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, a release states.
Yates, who lost a brother-in-law and nephew to cancer, has been volunteering with the American Cancer Society and the action network for more than 35 years and has served as the state lead ambassador for South Carolina for two years.
Indian Land resident completes Air Force pilot training
U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Kristopher Leist of Indian Land graduated from specialized undergraduate pilot training, earning his aviator wings at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma, a release states.
The 54-week pilot training program includes academic and physical training. Students must complete 254 hours of ground instruction, 27 hours in the flight simulator and 89 hours in an aircraft for primary training. Students must also attend 26 weeks of advanced training.
Leist is the son of Matthew and Kathryn Leist of Indian Land. Leist’s father presented him with his late grandfather’s Naval Aviator wings, a release states. His grandfather flew dive bombers off the USS Ranger in the Pacific theater in WWII.
Congressman Norman honors Nation Ford High School band
On Jan. 24, U.S. Congressman Ralph Norman, R-Rock Hill, congratulated Nation Ford High School’s marching band on their performance in the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade in fall. He presented the band members with certificates.
