An American Express Centurion Lounge is coming to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, after city council approved a lease with the popular credit card company earlier this week.
American Express will lease about 13,000 square feet between Concourses D and E. The lounge is expected to open in fall 2019.
American Express will pay a $5 million, one-time fee and pay $525,701 annually to rent the space for 10 years. American Express will also spend $3 million in advertising at the airport over the next decade.
Centurion Lounges, which are available to American Express global Platinum Card members and Centurion Members, have perks for cardholders like food, drinks, WiFi and work spaces.
Similar lounges are currently open at other airports, including Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, and Miami.
The new lounge will be one of many changes coming to the airport over the next year.
Concourses A and C will be getting makeovers, including new lighting, ceilings and flooring, shifting from carpet to terrazzo.
The upgrades are aimed at improving the travel experience for millions of passengers that travel through Charlotte.
The Concourse A construction began this fall will continue next year.
The changes include adding onto the building to add more restroom and concession space, according to airport officials. That will make the concourse bigger and also accommodate larger aircraft
